THE SOCIETY

The society is comprised of members who were given invitations for membership for one or both of two reasons: their capacity for interpreting Oracles (that is, random data), and their own individual skillsets. The society covers divers branches of specialism, and though it is not exclusive or secretive, it is --by nature-- elite in both methodology and execution. It is not necessary to expound here on membership numbers or on international presence.
Our chief business is the work of Oracle-interpretation. This is a craft like any other, requiring art and skill in equal measure. It is important to stress that it has no supernatural element, and is not divination or any kind of spiritual exercise. Oracle interpretation is a practical methodology, half art and half utility. It is governed methodologically by the Process.
Oracles themselves are any source of data which approaches true randomness. These are, now, often computer programs though they can also be any number of mechanical utilities, as well as natural phenomena. It has been theorised that the traditions of 'divination' such as Chiromancy or Hydromancy are bastardised forms of this craft. Our work is in the interpretation of, essentially, natural and engineered expressions of the entropic movement of existence.
Interpretations can serve any purpose- though they are never used to tell the 'future', since such an objective is pointless. The purposes of Oracle interpretation can be as varied as: informing the decision one may have to make when buying a new car (the colour, or the number of wheels); decision between sandwich fillings; the informing of the creation of visual art or music; the spicing of recipes; the deciding of true or ceremonial names, &c.
The Society also maintains several bodies of utility, including an archive, investigation and research beureaus, and a band of musicians.
The age and extent of the society are items of information we do not find appropriate to divulge on this platform, but the archives retain material that can be reliably dated as far back as the tenth century, and material which refers to events which far predate even those early eras.
